Getting Started with Counseling
No matter your previous experience, starting work with a new therapist can be intimidating, confusing, and even scary. Whether you’ve been to dozens of counselors in your life, or this will be your first ever visit to a mental health therapist, I will work with you to guide you through any potential bumps in the road as we begin our journey together. Hopefully, this page can help guide you through some of the initial steps in our relationship, to help ease any of your worries.
What We Might Talk About
In our sessions, we can address any issue or concern you bring to the table. If you’d like a jumping off point, here are some common topics that may come up over the course of therapy:
- Worry, fear, and anxiety
- Sadness, hope or hopelessness, and depression
- Traumatic experiences
- Relationship concerns
- Adjusting to major life changes
- Healthy boundaries
- Attachment and childhood
- Stress management and self-care
- Anger and conflict
- Communication and social skills
- Codependency
- Adoption, parenting, and blending families
- Addiction
- Chronic pain and medical conditions
- LGBTQ+ support
Initial Consultation
Research has shown time and time again that one of the most vital parts to making therapy work effectively is having a good working relationship with your therapist. An initial consultation allows both of us to gauge for how well we might work together, as well as help me learn whether I would be the most appropriate person to work with you.
When we first speak on the phone, we will talk for about fifteen minutes so we can get to know each other. During our conversation, we will discuss what made you decide to look into counseling, the services I provide, and I will answer any questions you may have. If we both feel like it's a good fit, I will send you a link to my digital portal for disclosure and intake forms, which need to be completed before our first session together.
